A pastor was observing the backstage preparations for a Christmas pageant. One of the little boys was going around to everyone, saying, “I’m a sheep; what are you?” Each child responded politely. He finally walked up to the little girl who’d been cast in the role of Mary and said, “I’m a sheep; what are you?”
The little girl said: “I’m Mary.” Realizing he was face to face with the lead character (since Jesus was a doll), the boy attempted to justify himself. He said very seriously, “It’s not easy being a sheep, you know.”
The little girl replied equally serious: “Yes, I know. It’s not easy being a virgin, either.”

Fr. Ed at the Shrine this past weekend made the point in his homily that we’re all called to the difficult task that Mary was – to give flesh to God – God’s love for us and God’s salvation. As we rapidly approach Christmas this year, let our prayer be for courage to echo Mary’s “Yes” to our Christian calling.
