Words and Music by Shannon Cerneka
My gifts don’t always lend themselves to listening
My thoughts don’t always lead me to your love
My words of prophecy sometimes fall on deaf ears
And I think that I’m not worthy
But by the grace of God
But by the grace of God
But by the grace of God I am
My love I give is sometimes tainted with greed
My hands and feet they don’t always do your will
My conscience, Father, it is never very clear
And I think that I’m not worthy
My eyes deceive me, they don’t always look to you
My heart is heavy, it’s not always yours to live in
My soul is aching when it wrestles with my will
And I think that I’m not worthy
I’ve Sinned, I Hurt, I’m weak,
But I am
I’m loved by you, my lord
I am

A note on this song from Shannon:
1 Corinthians 15:10 -
"But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that He gave me was not without effect."
God made me who I am. God's grace made me who I am. "Grace" means "gift", so everything I
am is God's gift to me. Everything - my features and my flaws, the things that I get right and the
things that I screw up. It's all this amazing, wonderful gift that is my life and my unique
personhood. And I can think of no better way to express gratitude for this gift than to carry this
message to God's young people.
A friend in ministry introduced me to this piece of scripture. We used it as a theme for a workshop
we gave at NCYC in 2001, and I felt these words so deeply, I wrote a song, "I Am".
